Emergency crews evacuate patients and battle blaze at Pennsylvania hospital
Seventy-seven patients, including six in intensive care, were evacuated safely after a fire severely damaged the orthopedic unit, with no major injuries reported, officials said.
- On Wednesday night, Lehigh Valley Hospital-Dickson City experienced a major fire, prompting the evacuation of 77 patients and the safe exit of all occupants, officials said.
- Fire officials said the fire began in the roof of an attached orthopedic building formerly known as Scranton Orthopedics, and the cause was not immediately known.
- Firefighters withdrew from interior attacks, used ladder trucks and large-diameter hose lines, and knocked down the blaze in about 30 minutes, with hot spots remaining after midnight.
- The orthopedic section appears to be a total loss, and the main hospital tower sustained smoke and water damage, Gov. Josh Shapiro said state responders were assisting on scene.
- The $40 million hospital opened in May 2022 with a 19-bay emergency room and 24 ICU, medical-surgical and step-down beds.
