Elon Musk Predicts Money Won't Matter From 2036
Khosla says AI could create abundance, but elected officials will decide whether it is shared broadly or concentrated among owners of the technology.
Elon Musk told The Economist editor Zanny Minton Beddoes that AI and robotics will create such abundance by 2036 that "money won't matter," arguing once robots generate more goods than humans can consume, currency loses its purpose.
Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, posted that he would "modify" Musk's prediction by adding a political qualifier: money won't matter in 2036 "only if the politics permits this great abundance."
At Stanford's FIS event, Khosla warned of "a five-year burst of productivity and cost cutting before a deflationary decade reshapes the global economy," signaling a rockier near-term path than Musk's narrative.
While Musk's prediction drew online mockery, another commenter offered backhanded validation, noting that "Elon is often right in the end, but usually about 10-15 years early on his predictions."
Khosla argues that solving the technology enabling abundance guarantees nothing about distribution, as outcomes depend "upon the policy approach of our elected officials and their willingness to tackle the severe redistribution problem pure capitalism may create.
The entrepreneur projects a society where robots and automated systems will take on much of the human tasks. He even believes that the main economic challenge of that stage will be deflation and not inflation.
The founder of Tesla places in 2036 the time when producing will cost so little that the money loses its meaning, and predicts deflation instead of inflation
