Banned Chinese Air Bag Part Blamed for Death in Survivable Crash
NHTSA says the banned replacement part has been tied to 11 deaths and 13 incidents since May 2023.
- On August 27, a motorist died in Dallas in a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox after a banned Chinese airbag inflator malfunctioned, marking the first fatality since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration banned the components in April.
- Regulators report these substandard inflators, manufactured by Chinese company Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System , malfunction in otherwise survivable crashes by 'sending large metal fragments into drivers' chests, necks, eyes and faces.'
- There have been 13 incidents reported since May 2023, with this event representing the 11th death tied to the faulty parts, including three fatalities in Hyundai Sonatas and seven in Chevrolet Malibus.
- DTN responded to the agency claiming it 'cannot be proven that the inflators in question' were manufactured by the company, while NHTSA urged owners of vehicles involved in crashes since 2020 to seek immediate inspections.
- General Motors, which owns Chevrolet, did not immediately comment on the incident, as regulators emphasize that whoever is installing these banned components into vehicles is putting American families in danger.
