In the early morning hours of Wednesday, a naturally begotten elephant calf was born in the Tiergarten Schönbrunn for the first time in over 20 years. The joy was huge after long efforts, according to Tiergarten director and elephant expert Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck in a message. In May 2023 a breeding bull was brought to Schönbrunn as part of the European conservation breeding program and the plant was prepared for birth.
