10 New Elective Care Hubs to Be Opened Across Wales by New Government
A Welsh Government expert group will map the hubs, with 680,000 active waits and 168,400 waits over 36 weeks.
The Welsh Government plans to create 10 new elective care hubs across Wales to accelerate treatment for patients awaiting non-emergency care, separating planned procedures from emergency pressures.
Persistent waiting lists in Wales include around 680,000 active cases, with 168,400 patients waiting more than 36 weeks and just under 3,700 waiting over two years.
Cabinet Minister for Health and Care Mabon ap Gwynfor announced £145m in investment to support the hubs, which will be designed by retired consultant orthopaedic surgeon Rhidian Morgan-Jones.
Expanding diagnostic and surgical capacity, the planning team includes Professor Jon Barry, director Wales of the Royal College of Surgeons, and national clinical lead Dr. Claire R. Dunstan from NHS Wales.
A full delivery plan is due by the end of 2026, with The Elective Care Expert Group delivering recommendations to the Cabinet Minister before year-end and hubs becoming operational during the current Senedd term.
