Elections Alberta says over 500K mail-in referendum ballots requested so far

Elections Alberta says requests have topped 509,000, more than eight times the 2023 special-ballot total, as it begins sending ballots.

  • On Thursday, Elections Alberta reported receiving more than 509,000 mail-in ballot requests for the Oct. 19 referendum, marking an unprecedented surge in voting demand. Electors have eight days remaining to apply.
  • With nearly three million eligible voters in Alberta, approximately 17 per cent have expressed intentions to vote by mail. This participation rate reflects unprecedented interest in the provincial referendum.
  • While approximately 72 per cent of applications are approved, issues like typos delayed 7,200 requests. A production error affected 0.09 per cent of packages, which Elections Alberta resolved by issuing replacements.
  • To staff the voting process, the agency aims to recruit 60,000 election officers and has received nearly 48,000 applications. Officials are also working with correctional institutions to ensure incarcerated Albertans can participate.
  • Voters must submit special ballot applications by Sept. 25 ahead of the Oct. 19 referendum. The ballot features 10 questions, including an inquiry on whether Alberta should remain in Canada.
