Alleged Home Invader Shot After Elderly Couple Stabbed
Police say the 34-year-old intruder was shot after allegedly stabbing the couple, who were airlifted to hospital in critical condition.
On Thursday, a 75-year-old man and 72-year-old woman were critically injured after a 34-year-old man allegedly entered their Torrington home and stabbed them, requiring airlift to Gold Coast Hospital.
After initially fleeing the property, the assailant attempted to re-enter, prompting the homeowner to shoot him in the abdomen; police confirmed the attacker was unknown to the couple and stole nothing.
Detective Superintendent Chris McKinnon stated officials are "baffled" by the motive, noting the incident occurred in a "fairly quiet regional location," while the 34-year-old remains in custody at Armidale Hospital.
Police praised the resident's self-defense actions, noting he "certainly did his best" to protect his partner despite critical injuries; the attacker faces court on Thursday charged with two counts of wounding with intent to murder.
Authorities urged residents to secure their premises and remain aware of strangers in the area; anyone with information regarding the Torrington incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
