El Salvador’s Bukele says bodies found in Haiti are not those of missing Salvadorans
Bukele said the remains were not the missing aviation technicians as El Salvador sent more than 100 special forces troops to help find them.
On Saturday, President Nayib Bukele denied that human remains handed over at Haiti's airport were the four missing Salvadorans who disappeared after a gang attack on Oct. 18.
The four missing Salvadorans are aviation technicians, not combat-trained troops, serving in a gang suppression force established by the Security Council to combat organized crime in the Caribbean.
Bukele wrote that remains included a child and a man "of considerably greater height than that of our air technicians," alongside foreign military uniforms. "They are not our men," he wrote.
El Salvador deployed more than 100 special forces troops to Haiti on Oct. 22 to assist in rescue efforts, warning criminals of a forceful response if the technicians are not released unharmed.
The New York Times reported the bodies found were "severely burned," noting autopsies are needed for identification, while an official confirmed they were not the missing Salvadorans.
