The Government of El Salvador Partners With Linguard Labs to Relaunch Chivo and Lead Financial Inclusion in El Salvador
Linguard Labs says 4.5 million registered accounts will keep balances as it relaunches Chivo and targets nearly $10 billion in annual remittances.
On Thursday, October 8, 2026, the government of El Salvador and payments company Linguard Labs announced that Linguard now controls the state-backed Chivo wallet.
Originally established in 2021, the Chivo wallet served as the Bukele government's primary tool for integrating Bitcoin as legal tender alongside the US dollar.
With over 4.5 million registered accounts, the platform facilitates financial connections for Salvadorans abroad, supporting a corridor that saw almost US$10 billion in remittances during 2025.
Linguard pledged that transfers from the US will be free for users in the 'Regular' category, ensuring existing account balances remain protected during transition.
Uncertainty remains regarding eligibility rules for the 'Regular' status and the official launch date, while the exact count of active, eligible accounts is currently unconfirmed.
The Chivo wallet prepares a relaunch under the majority control of Linguard Labs, a fintech firm linked to former executives of Visa and JPMorgan. The proposal includes microcredits, cash advances, free remittances from the United States and debit cards with money back.
