Eisenkot offers hawkish alternative to Netanyahu for Israeli PM
The former military chief says he would keep a hard line on Hamas while building a wider governing bloc than Netanyahu’s coalition.
Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot emerged as the primary challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of the October 27 election, positioning himself as a media-shy security hawk offering a clear contrast to the veteran leader.
Eisenkot, who served 41 years in the Israel Defense Forces commanding troops in the West Bank and Lebanon, founded the Yashar party in 2025 to offer an honest political alternative emphasizing his 'Dahiyeh doctrine' of disproportionate force.
In a Channel 7 interview, Eisenkot declared 'two states for two peoples is a mistake' and criticized Netanyahu for failing to achieve 'total victory' against Hamas, while insisting settlements must be 'legal.'
Seeking a broad national consensus, Eisenkot told Channel 7 'I will make efforts to bring in more Zionist parties,' explicitly rejecting Netanyahu's far-right partners Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for inciting violence.
Eitan Shamir, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, described Eisenkot as 'very likable, not a politician, an everyday person,' while his standing is shaped by personal loss—his son and two nephews killed in Gaza.
Al-Quds: Former Israeli Army Chief of Staff, Gadi Eisenkot, a conservative figure who is distanced from the media and relatively new to Israeli policy, represents a clear contrast to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a veteran leader who is seeking to overthrow Izinkot at next week's elections.
