Eight departments in the west of France - Finistère, Morbihan, Manche, Ille-et-Vilaine, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Vendée and Loire-Atlantique - were placed in a warm orange watch by Météo-France.
Finistère, Morbihan, Manche, Ille-et-Vilaine, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Vendée and Loire-Atlantique have been placed in orange vigilance by Météo-France. Maximum temperatures between 32 and 36°C are expected on Tuesday afternoon.
While France is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave, Météo France has placed the Finistère in an orange heat alert Tuesday 26 May 2026 with 34 °C expected, while the Gironde remains in yellow despite 36 °C. A difference that is explained because the alert levels are calibrated according to the specifics of the departments.
A "heat dome" has been crushing France for several days and should not evaporate until Saturday, May 30, warns Météo France. Eight departments are placed in orange vigilance in the west of France, while seven dead would be "related directly or indirectly to the heat", announced on Tuesday, May 26, government spokesman Maud Bregeon.
