Egypt says ready to give Saudi Arabia necessary support amid Houthi conflict
Egypt says it will support Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks, and lawmakers are set to vote on authorizing defensive military aid.
On Sunday, Egypt's National Defense Council pledged to provide "all necessary and possible forms of support" to Saudi Arabia to defend the kingdom's security amid escalating Houthi attacks.
Escalating strikes by Iran-aligned Houthis against Saudi Arabia have killed over 19 people and injured 364 this month, with King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh heavily targeted by missiles and drones.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi requested an urgent parliamentary session to authorize military measures, emphasizing the assistance is defensive: "I am not talking about going to war with anyone or attacking anyone."
Parliament is scheduled to convene at 1 p.m. today to vote on authorizing the military support, following the National Defense Council's declaration of "full support and solidarity" with Saudi Arabia.
President El-Sisi recalled how Gulf partners provided essential aid to Egypt following severe economic setbacks and fuel shortages after the political upheaval of 2011, underpinning current strategic ties.
