Nigeria: Niso Attributes Declining Power Output to Gas Supply Shortfalls

Gas supply to thermal plants is below 43% of demand, causing generation to drop to 4,300MW and forcing load shedding nationwide, NISO reported.

  • NISO said the national grid is receiving only one-third of needed gas, reducing electricity generation to 4,300 Megawatts and prompting load shedding.
  • Given that thermal units dominate the generation mix, thermal power plants require 1,629.75 MMSCF per day, so any gas disruption directly reduces Nigeria's generation capacity.
  • Data indicate that only 692.00 MMSCF was delivered on February 23, 2026, representing less than 43% of the required gas, causing constrained generation output.
  • The system operator said it regrets the inconvenience and NISO pledged to work with stakeholders to restore full energy allocation soon.
  • To maintain grid stability, the operator will dispatch available energy following NERC MYTO allocation percentages across all distribution networks and implement load shedding when generation drops significantly.
