AAU Lecturer Dies in Edo Hotel After Alleged Encounter with Sex Worker

Police say the hotel owner, manager and sex worker are in custody as investigators await the lecturer’s cause of death.

  • On Sunday, Matthew Uwuigbe, a senior lecturer at the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, died in an Ekpoma hotel room shortly after an encounter with 21-year-old Angela Defa Jacob.
  • Police received the report at about 8 p.m. on Sunday and arrested three individuals in custody: the hotel owner, the manager, and Jacob.
  • According to police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem, Uwuigbe sent Jacob to purchase water, but upon her return she found him lying dead in the room.
  • University spokesperson Mike Aladenika confirmed Uwuigbe as a staff member but stressed the incident occurred off-campus and the woman involved was not a student.
  • Similar sudden deaths in hotels have prompted police investigations across Nigeria, including a July 2026 incident in Jigawa State and a November 2025 case in Ondo State.
