Latin America Had Its Lowest Level of Poverty in 2024 Since Records Began.

Calmer labour markets and job growth in Mexico and Brazil helped reduce poverty to 25.5%, but Latin America remains highly unequal, second only to parts of Africa.

Summary
According to a report released Wednesday by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), 25.5% of the region’s population, about 162 million people, lived in monetary poverty in 2024. That figure represents a 2.2% decrease from the previous year and is the lowest level since comparable records have been kept. ECLAC said the regional improvement was driven largely by gains in Mexico and several South American countries, which helped offset slower progress elsewhere.
