Eby says Canada’s not-criminally-responsible system re-victimizes families
British Columbia Premier David Eby criticized the Criminal Code provisions for individuals found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder, stating that the system re-victimizes families such as those of three murdered children in Surrey.
Eby argued that the current federal system does not provide sufficient support to families affected by these cases and described the system as ineffective.
The British Columbia Review Board granted Allan Schoenborn, found not criminally responsible for the 2008 first-degree murders of his three children, a conditional discharge with supervised conditions.
Premier Eby plans to contact the federal government about his concerns, calling Schoenborn's conditional discharge a troubling outcome and urging a serious federal review of the system.
