Ebola: Kenya reports no new cases five days after first infection
Authorities said 293 tests found no additional infections as 108 contacts remained in quarantine and daily monitoring.
- On Tuesday, Kenyan authorities confirmed the country's first Ebola death after a man who had lived in Congo for seven years traveled to Nairobi via Uganda. Doctors isolated him and confirmed the Bundibugyo virus.
- Spending fewer than 24 hours in Uganda, the patient passed "normal public health screening" at Entebbe International Airport before flying to Nairobi. Ministry officials indicate he was not flagged as a suspected case during the screening process.
- As of Wednesday, the World Health Organization recorded 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 deaths in the DRC. By October 3, the patient arrived in Nairobi exhibiting fever, chills, and severe fatigue.
- Kenyan health authorities placed border points on high alert, launching contact-tracing efforts to identify people who may have been exposed. Preliminary tests on a 20-year-old patient from the DRC returned negative for Ebola on Thursday.
- Christian Happi, a professor at Redeemer's University, argued that authorities should require a negative Ebola test before boarding flights from the DRC. He noted that temperature checks can miss travelers who are not running a fever.
