East of Eden Reviews on X: Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames Has Viewers Calling Her Performance a Masterclass While X Remains Divided
Zoe Kazan’s seven-hour series covers Steinbeck’s full novel and takes a more humanistic approach than the 1955 film, critics said.
On Thursday, Netflix released a seven-hour adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 novel "East of Eden," scripted and co-produced by writer Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of filmmaker Elia Kazan.
Unlike the 1955 film that spotlighted the sons, this series focuses on the Trask family's origins, emphasizing the scars inflicted by and on Adam Trask, his half-brother Charles Trask, and the enigmatic Cathy Ames.
Oscar nominee Florence Pugh anchors the series as Cathy Ames, described as "one of American literature's most famous antiheroines," portraying her as a fierce, cunning fighter for her own agency.
Christopher Abbott portrays Adam Trask while Hoon Lee plays the family caretaker Lee, whose dynamic with Abbott explores the family's struggle to survive under the weight of past sins.
Directors Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre use the expanded seven-part format to offer a humanistic interpretation of Steinbeck's work, moving beyond the "Method melodrama" of the 1955 film.
