East Midlands Areas on List of 21 Counties Set to Hit 30C
The forecaster says temperatures could reach 33C and break May and spring UK records as heatwave conditions spread across central and western England.
The Met Office forecasts a heatwave across 21 counties this Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures potentially surging to 33C by Monday. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steve Kocher said records may be broken, marking the nation's warmest weather this year.
An official heatwave is declared when an area experiences at least three consecutive days with temperatures exceeding regional thresholds ranging from 25C to 28C. Temperatures are expected to reach 28C in parts of England on Friday before climbing above 30C across several areas over the following three days.
Temperatures could eclipse the 32.8C May record set in Camden Square, London in 1922, with a 40 per cent chance southern England reaches 33C on Sunday. The UK may be warmer than Mediterranean destinations including Mykonos, Rhodes, and Tenerife this weekend.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued heat health alerts covering the Midlands and southern England, warning of minor impacts across health and social care services. The British Red Cross advised staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen and taking breaks from the sun to avoid dehydration, sunburn and heat stroke.
Heatwave conditions will extend across central and western England and into parts of Wales by Sunday, while Wales could meet heatwave criteria. Parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland are forecast to see temperatures reaching the mid-20s by next week, with northwestern Scotland remaining cooler with some rain.
