East Mathers Lime Kiln in Johnshaven, Scotland

This former lime kiln is believed to have been developed by a man named George Carnegie of nearby Pitarrow, Scotland (near Laurencekirk), during the late 1760s. Limestone was quarried from under the field behind the area, where an eight foot thick seam of limestone has been blasted out.  During World War II, the Home Guard used the lime kiln as a lookout over the sea and coastline.
