5.5 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Tokyo Region but No Danger of a Tsunami, Meteorological Agency Says
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the magnitude 5.5 quake prompted suspensions on several bullet train and local rail lines.
A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook Eastern Japan, including Tokyo, on Tuesday, with the Japan Meteorological Agency confirming no risk of a tsunami.
The tremor struck at 7:46 p.m. in southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of about 50 kilometers, reaching lower 5 intensity in southern Gunma and northern Saitama.
East Japan Railway suspended Hokuriku and Joetsu Shinkansen services while local Takasaki and Tobu railway lines halted operations; Tohoku Shinkansen services resumed between Tokyo and Shin-Shirakawa.
Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways confirmed operations at Haneda, Narita, and Fukushima airports remain normal, and operators reported no abnormalities at nuclear facilities.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported no injuries or structural damage from the quake, which struck a region on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
