Early Snow Melt Observed in Much of B.C.
Warm, dry April weather left the province with 28% of its snowpack melted, far above the 6% average by early May, officials said.
- British Columbia's provincial mountain snowpack dropped to 83 per cent of normal levels as of May 1, with data confirming the annual melt is trending earlier than usual this year.
- During April, warm and dry conditions limited snow accumulation across much of the province, while mean monthly temperatures in Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, and Kamloops remained above normal.
- Vancouver Island faces the lowest levels at 27 per cent of normal, followed by the Okanagan at 31 per cent, the South Coast at 45 per cent, the Boundary at 53 per cent, and the Similkameen at 61 per cent.
- For the fourth consecutive year, communities across the province face rising drought risks, prompting Coree Tull of the BC Watershed Security Coalition to warn that water insecurity is becoming the new normal.
- Compiled by the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, the provincial report relies on data from 86 manual snow courses and 118 automated snow weather stations to track conditions.
