Report: Eagles to Release Andy Dalton
The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Dalton, who has 169 career starts, departs after a brief stint as a depth option.
Acquired from the Carolina Panthers in March, Dalton shared 'co-QB2' duties with Tanner McKee throughout training camp. He struggled to secure the backup role, eventually losing his position on the depth chart.
During a 27-7 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 3, Dalton replaced Jalen Hurts for a concussion evaluation. His lone pass attempt resulted in an interception by rookie safety Dillon Thieneman.
The Eagles subsequently promoted McKee to second-string quarterback, with rookie Cole Payton now serving as the third option behind starter Hurts. Both players anchor Philadelphia's new depth chart structure.
Carrying four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster became untenable amid mounting injuries, forcing the team to clear space. However, the Eagles may still bring Dalton back to their practice squad, per Garafolo.
