FDA Reports Positive E. Coli Sample in Raw Farm Cheese Investigation
FDA said 19 cheese samples were tested as investigators work to determine whether nine illnesses are linked to RAW FARM products.
- On Thursday, the FDA reported a sample of RAW FARM-brand Cheddar Cheese tested positive for E. coli during its investigation. However, the agency said the strain "matches illnesses from a different 2025 outbreak investigated by CDC."
- Earlier this month, California-based RAW FARM issued a Voluntary Recall of select cheeses at the FDA's request. The company has repeatedly pushed back on claims that its products caused outbreaks.
- The current multistate E. coli outbreak has sickened nine people across California, Florida, and Texas. Three were hospitalized, with one person developing hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition leading to kidney failure.
- RAW FARM owner Mark McAfee previously refused to recall products, later agreeing to do so "under protest." The company maintains it "disputes being the cause of this outbreak."
- Federal agencies are investigating whether those sickened in a 2025 outbreak consumed RAW FARM-brand products. This follows a 2024 incident where the company's raw cheddar cheese was linked to a separate outbreak.
