DWP Confirms when People Will Receive Winter Fuel Payments

Nine million people born before Sept 22, 1959, will receive £200-£300 automatically to support winter heating costs, including those with incomes over £35,000, DWP said.

  • The Department for Work and Pensions begins automatic winter fuel payments on November 1, 2025, for everyone in England and Wales born before 22 September 1959, covering nine million extra people.
  • Following the policy change, the DWP announced the expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme, helping 2.7 million more families, with details published by the end of June 2025.
  • The payment ranges from 200 to 300, with letters in October or November informing eligible people of their amount, says Energy Secretary Ed Miliband.
  • Those earning over £35,000 will have their Winter Fuel Payment reclaimed via tax-code changes in 2026 to 2027 or Self Assessment for 2025 to 2026, with payments automatic and no action required.
  • The DWP warns scammers sending fraudulent texts claiming to be officials, urging people not to respond and to forward messages to 7726, amid a 153% surge in scam referrals in late September.
