DWP April benefit rule change to give some families £3,650 a year
- On March 18 the DWP confirmed the law ending the two-child limit comes into force April 6, 2026, allowing families on Universal Credit to claim for every child.
- The Government argues the measure is the most cost-effective way to drive down child poverty, describing removal of the cap as "the single most cost-effective measure" to cut child poverty.
- Existing Universal Credit claimants will see payments updated automatically, with benefits uprated in April by 3.8% plus a 2.3% boost, making a total 6.2% increase for the standard rate.
- More than 400,000 families could gain thousands of pounds annually, though roughly 50,000 may not benefit due to the benefit cap, and new LCWRA payments will drop from £94 to £50 weekly.
- The Government projects up to 1.5 million children could benefit and the change carries an estimated £3bn-a-year price tag, affecting 469,780 households with around 60% having at least one parent in work.
