DVLA Issues Warning to UK Drivers or Risk Hefty Fine
- The DVLA warned UK motorists this week to declare off-road vehicles via SORN, warning `You could face court prosecution and a fine of up to 2,500 if you use it on the road for any other reason`.
- When a vehicle is not taxed or insured, a Statutory Off Road Notification is required to stop vehicle tax and insurance obligations while it remains off the public road, the DVLA said.
- Drivers can apply for a SORN online, by phone or by post, and check a vehicle's SORN status on GOV.UK; a SORN'd vehicle may only be driven to or from a pre-booked MOT or testing appointment.
- Failure to register triggers an automatic fine for not having a SORN and a separate penalty for keeping an uninsured vehicle; a SORN cancels when the vehicle is taxed again, sold, exported, or scrapped.
- The Department for Transport says there has been a rise in older drivers in recent years, with licence reforms starting 27 October 2025 adding health and eyesight self-assessment requirements for drivers aged 55 and above.
