While regulators have repeatedly criticized the AIVD and MIVD in recent years for overstepping their bounds, the cabinet actually wants to give the secret services more room to operate. According to Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz (Defense), this is necessary because "the threat level is unprecedented" and the Netherlands must be able to respond more quickly to foreign threats.
The Cabinet wants a new, threat-oriented law that covers what the AIVD and MIVD are permitted to do: the National Security Protection Act by the Intelligence and Security Services. According to the Cabinet, the security services must be able to operate more agilely in a time of major geopolitical threats.
