Dunleavy requests federal disaster declaration after Western Alaska storm

More than 1,000 residents from over 50 remote communities were displaced by a record storm surge, with federal aid sought to cover emergency costs fully, officials said.

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy said the damage is of “such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the state.” State lawmakers are raising concerns about options given to people who lost their homes.
