Dual PAN cards case: Relief for Azam Khan, Abdullah Azam as Allahabad HC grants bail, suspends sentence
On Thursday, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam Khan in the two PAN card cases, while suspending the sentences handed down by the trial court.
Separately, the Enforcement Directorate attached the land and buildings of the Azam Khan-promoted Mohammad Ali Jauhar University on Wednesday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The provisional order covers 59 buildings valued at Rs 1,170 crore; the agency alleges government funds meant for public works were diverted for construction of the private university.
Justice Samit Gopal rejected the pair's request to stay their conviction, leaving their electoral disqualification in effect despite the suspension of sentences providing interim relief.
The probe originated from 26 FIRs alleging forced land acquisition, while the Rampur Development Authority previously ordered demolition of 38 campus buildings earlier this year, intensifying legal pressure.
