Drivers warned over five things that will fail your MOT - 'check tyres immediately' - Nottinghamshire Live

Falken Tyre experts advise drivers to check tread depth, inflation, and damage to avoid MOT failure linked to safety risks and braking issues.

  • Specialists at Falken Tyre urged drivers to check tyres immediately ahead of MOTs, with Andreas Giese, chief corporate officer at Falken Tyre Europe, stressing tyres are the only part touching the road.
  • A Halfords‑commissioned study of nearly 500 cars found eight per cent had tread below 3mm and four of 481 were at or below the 1.6mm legal limit, with dealerships offering worn tyres for test drives.
  • Use a 20p coin or gauge to check tread; he explained: `This includes different sizes tyres on the same axle or your tyres not meeting a speed rating of at least 70 mph or load rating for your vehicle` to avoid MOT failure.
  • Current rules permit a 12 month MOT with 1.6mm tread, which can become illegal after a distance of approximately 33 miles and increase stopping distance by 75 meters at 70mph in wet conditions.
  • Experts estimate around 1.2m cars a year have potentially dangerous tyres, with over 75,000 likely illegal sales; safety advocates propose raising the legal limit to 3.6mm or 4mm.
