Drivers Warned of £5,000 Fines over Car Air Conditioning Rule 'to Prevent Drowsiness'
Motorists are told to use air conditioning or open windows as experts warn poor ventilation can lead to fines and drowsy driving.
Southern England and the Midlands could reach 33°C on Monday, surpassing the UK's May record of 32.8°C, prompting motorists to ventilate vehicles and comply with the Highway Code.
Rule 237 of the Highway Code mandates well-ventilated vehicles to prevent driver drowsiness. Swansway Motor Group added: 'Good ventilation is important for staying alert and driving safely.'
Experts at Swansway Motor Group said: 'Breaking Rule 237 could result in an on-the-spot fine' if drivers are deemed to be driving carelessly due to poor ventilation.
Drivers face £1,000 fines for careless driving, while serious accidents linked to poor ventilation can result in £5,000 fines and nine penalty points on their licence.
The government warns that disobeying Highway Code requirements constitutes a criminal offence, with penalties including licence disqualification or, 'in the most serious cases you may be sent to prison.
