Drivers Warned of £5,000 Fines over Car Air Conditioning as Temperatures Soar
Motorists are told to use air conditioning or open windows as temperatures near 33°C and poor ventilation can bring fines.
Southern England and the Midlands could see temperatures of up to 33°C on Monday, surpassing the UK's current May record of 32.8°C, prompting motorists to ventilate vehicles under Highway Code Rule 237.
Rule 237 mandates vehicle ventilation to prevent driver drowsiness, as Swansway Motor Group explained that without enough airflow, a car's interior can heat quickly, causing driver fatigue and slower reaction times.
Penalties escalate from £1,000 fines for careless driving to £5,000 in serious cases, with nine penalty points added to driving licences if accidents result from inadequate ventilation.
Government authorities warn that breaking Rule 237 could result in on-the-spot fines if driving is deemed careless, with failure to comply potentially leading to disqualification or imprisonment in serious cases.
While Highway Code rules are not inherently laws, many cross into legal requirements carrying criminal penalties, making driver responsibility for ventilation compliance critical during extreme heat conditions this bank holiday weekend.
