80-year-old drives Mercedes down Rome's Spanish Steps and gets stuck
- An 80-year-old man was stopped by police after driving a compact Mercedes-Benz A Class luxury car partway down Rome's Spanish Steps early Tuesday morning.
- The Spanish Steps, built in the 1720s and named after the nearby Spanish Embassy to the Holy See, have never been intended for vehicle traffic.
- Police stopped the driver at around 04:30, who tested negative on a breathalyser and was cited on the spot for driving down the historic monument.
- Firefighters used a crane to lift the sporty car off the steps, placing wooden planks over the travertine to shield the historic staircase from additional harm during the removal.
- This event follows previous incidents, including a 2022 Maserati driver damaging the steps and a costly 1.5 million euro restoration by Bulgari between 2015 and 2016.
