4 People Dead After Major Crash Involving Coach Bus, Van in Port Arthur
Officials said multiple injuries were reported and some patients were airlifted in critical condition after the collision.
On Monday afternoon, a Chevrolet Express van crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Hotard Coaches bus on Highway 87 in Sabine Pass, killing four people, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Preliminary investigations indicate the van was traveling northwest when it crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, striking the southeast-bound bus. An Audi passenger car following the bus subsequently struck the rear of the vehicle.
The van driver, a 28-year-old from Baytown, and three passengers died at the scene, while five others were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Both the bus driver and Audi driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Trisha Fridrich, Vice President of Commercial Operations at Hotard, said the company is "fully cooperating with local authorities as they investigate this matter." Hotard officials confirmed only one bus was involved.
Emergency responders, including the Port Arthur Fire Department and Air Rescue, worked to stabilize patients while the Texas Department of Public Safety conducted its active investigation. Officials temporarily closed Highway 87 to facilitate rescue operations.
