Kenyan father haunted by children's deaths ahead of starvation cult leader's sentencing
Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie faces sentencing on Friday for the murders of 190 children and one adult, with The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions seeking the death penalty.
Self-Proclaimed pastor Paul Mackenzie incited followers to starve themselves to "meet Jesus" at his Shakahola Forest base, a movement known as the "Shakahola Forest Massacre" that denounced education as "satanic."
Stephen Mwiti, who lost all six of his children, and Francis Wanje, who lost two grandchildren, expressed lingering grief; The Kenya National Commission reported the death toll reached 429 in 2024.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jami Yamina requested the death penalty, citing scale of loss, while prosecutors asked to sentence 28 co-defendants to life imprisonment, arguing they were "deeply indoctrinated by Mackenzie and were at risk of reoffending."
Families fear Mackenzie could continue spreading his message from prison, fueling calls for tighter regulation of religious organizations, while he faces separate terrorism and manslaughter charges and his lawyer plans an appeal.
