- Former NFL All-Pro Doug Martin died while in Oakland Police Department custody, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers confirmed on Oct. 19, and his family said he passed Saturday morning.
- Officers responded to nearly simultaneous reports of a break-in and a medical emergency and located Doug Martin inside the residence near the Oakland Zoo, prompting a brief struggle during detention on Saturday.
- The Oakland Police Department said the homicide section, internal affairs bureau, Oakland City Police Commission, Community Police Review Agency and Alameda County District Attorney's Office will investigate, and officers are on paid administrative leave; state law requires reporting to the Attorney General within 10 days.
- Martin's family released a statement Sunday saying the cause of death was unconfirmed and asked for privacy, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers mourned his "sudden and unexpected" passing. Officials said additional details will be shared soon as the investigative process allows.
- Martin's career spanned 2012-18 with stops in Tampa Bay and Oakland, rushing for 1,454 yards as a rookie and earning 2015 All-Pro honors.
