Double meteor showers peak this week, but the moon may steal the show
The observatory said observers may see up to 25 meteors an hour, though moonlight and city lights could reduce visibility.
- Tomorrow and Thursday, The Southern Delta Aquariids meteor shower will peak in Singapore, with the Science Centre Observatory confirming the phenomenon will appear on July 29 and 30.
- During the peak, Earth passes through dust and debris left by Comet Machholz Complex, with particles burning up in the atmosphere to create the bright streaks known as 'shooting stars.' The shower draws its name from the constellation Aquarius.
- Ideal viewing occurs between 2am and 5.30am in dark areas away from city lights, with suitable locations including East Coast Park, Changi Beach Park, West Coast Park, Marina Barrage, and the Southern Ridges.
- While no special equipment is needed, viewers should allow 20 minutes to 30 minutes for eyes to adjust to darkness. However, the Moon may obscure some meteors as the peak coincides with the full moon on July 29.
- Observers can see up to 25 meteors an hour under ideal conditions, though actual numbers are usually lower due to light pollution. The next major meteor shower visible from Singapore is the Perseid, peaking around Aug 12 to 13.

Meteor fireball over South Island, New Zealand on July 27
A fireball that streaked across the skies of the South Island just before sunset on Sunday likely plunged into the sea, experts say. The meteor was seen across the Mainland at 5.51pm on Sunday and appeared to crash beneath the waves of Canterbury's East Coast, Steve Wyn-Harris from Fireballs Aotearoa said. Jas Mina was driving her Tesla along Old West Coast Rd, heading into Christchurch, when her cameras captured the object.
