DOJ places on leave 2 prosecutors who said Jan. 6 was carried out by a 'mob' of 'rioters': Report
- On Thursday, District Judge Carl Nichols praised federal prosecutors Carlos Valdivia and Samuel White, saying `I just want to express my view that they did a commendable and excellent job in this case`.
- A Tuesday sentencing memo described Taylor Taranto's role in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack and described `thousands of people comprising a mob of rioters`, which the Justice Department later withdrew.
- Nichols sentenced Taylor Taranto to 21 months, which amounted to time served, and imposed 36 months of supervised release with drug testing and a mental health assessment.
- The original sentencing memo is listed as sealed, and Nichols said he would release it unless the DOJ justified keeping it hidden; a replacement memo filed by new DOJ lawyers scrubbed the contested references.
- President Donald Trump granted clemency this year to Taranto and about 1,500 Jan. 6 defendants, but that pardon did not apply to Taranto's 2023 conduct, and Justice Department actions continue to reverberate within the U.S. Attorney's office.
