Justice Department subpoenas California officials in escalation of its scrutiny of local elections
The subpoenas follow a federal judge’s appointment of a special master to examine claims that about 20,000 noncitizens are on California voter rolls.
On Thursday, the Justice Department issued subpoenas to California election officials, escalating scrutiny of local election administration through all four U.S. attorneys in the state.
District Judge David appointed special master Daniel Garrie to evaluate claims that California has about 20,000 noncitizens on voter rolls, less than 24 hours after rejecting a ballot sequestration demand.
Carter, an appointee of Democratic President Bill Clinton, argued the Justice Department's demands violated the National Voter Registration Act, which prohibits election changes within 90 days of voting.
Trump appealed to the Circuit Court to block ballot counting as The Associated Press reported subpoenas for Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder employees to appear in court on Nov. 4.
Irreversible ballot processing continues statewide, the Justice Department argued, with over 500,000 votes already processed in Los Angeles County alone, prompting the administration's demand for an urgent appeals court ruling.
