Masdar and RWE Receive Planning Approval for 3GW UK Offshore Wind Project
The project is expected to power 3 million homes and support more than 3,000 construction and operational jobs, Masdar said.
- Lord Whitehead, acting for Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, approved The Development Consent Order for the 3-gigawatt Dogger Bank South wind farm on Thursday. Masdar and RWE can now proceed with the major offshore project.
- Masdar and RWE signed an agreement at Cop28 in December 2023 and later secured Contracts for Difference through the Allocation Round in January. The partnership builds on a $14 billion UAE-UK sovereign investment agreement.
- Located about 100km off England, the DBS East and DBS West sites will provide 3 gigawatts of power. The project aims to power three million homes while creating 2,000 construction jobs and over 1,000 operational roles.
- Retired offshore manager Bob Roberts, from Scarborough, said the projects "could make a massive difference to Yorkshire." However, he noted successive councils have struggled to secure grants to capitalize on these developments.
- Developers RWE and Masdar will now conduct Detailed final design work and procurement decisions, aiming to reach a final investment decision by 2027. The project is fully commissioned by 2031.
