'Tears All Around': Woman Reunited with Beloved Dog Missing for Five Years
A rescue used a microchip to identify Lilly and arranged the Colorado reunion after more than five years apart.
Courtney Short and her dog Lilly reunited earlier this week after being separated for more than five years and 900 miles. The pair had not seen each other since August 2021.
Separation began after a breakup when an ex-boyfriend took Lilly in August 2021. Rescuers later found her as a stray in the Moab Desert before she became a stray again in Mound City, Kansas.
Janet Jackson of Dirt Road Rescue tested Lilly for a microchip and located Courtney. Jackson noted, "Just on the outside chance that maybe we would get a chip read, and we did."
Dirt Road Rescue arranged the reunion in Colorado. "There were tears all around, and Lilly is just the best dog," Courtney said of the emotional meeting.
Courtney emphasized keeping microchip information current, stating, "When you're moving, updating your pet's chip is probably the last thing you ever think of doing." Her diligence in updates enabled the rescue to find her.
