Dodgers honor gay trailblazers Glenn Burke and Billy Bean with permanent stadium display
The display features framed jerseys and photos as the team marks its 13th Pride Night and honors the first two major leaguers to say they were gay.
- On Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers unveiled a permanent display inside Dodger Stadium honoring LGBTQ+ trailblazers Glenn Burke and Billy Bean during the team's 13th Pride Night.
- Burke and Bean were the first two MLB players to come out as gay; Burke famously invented the high-five with Dusty Baker, while Bean served as an MLB executive.
- Families applauded as a blue curtain dropped to reveal the display featuring framed jerseys and photos against a swirling rainbow wall. "It's brave of them in this day and age to spotlight someone in our community," said Greg Baker, Bean's husband.
- Dusty Baker, who remained close to Bean's family, grew emotional addressing the gathering. "We still love him," said Joyce Burke Henderson, one of Burke's three sisters from California.
- Baker acknowledged significant work remains to combat homophobia within the sports community. "There's always going to be homophobia, just hopefully there's going to be less and less of it," he said.
