An international team of scientists is using ancient DNA to trace how populations changed in parts of Central Europe after the decline of Roman rule.
The researchers sequenced genetic material from 314 people who lived between the 3rd and 6th centuries in the Lesser Hungarian Plain region, now part of northwestern Hungary. The remains were found in seven necropolises and are between about 1,400 and 1,800 years old.
