DJI Is Suing Insta360 for Violating Multiple Osmo Pocket Patents

DJI says Insta360’s Luna cameras copy its Osmo Pocket design and utility patents and is seeking an injunction, damages and enhanced relief.

  • On Thursday, June 11, DJI filed two lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Arashi Vision Inc., doing business as Insta360, alleging infringement of design and utility patents.
  • DJI claims Insta360's new Luna line of gimbal cameras, including the Insta360 Luna Ultra, "blatantly copy" the architecture and features of the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.
  • The lawsuits allege four utility patent violations, including gimbal control methods and real-time subject tracking, plus two design patent infringements concerning the elongated handheld body and integrated module design.
  • While Insta360 declined to comment, sources indicate the company is preparing patent countersuits against DJI in the United States regarding its own utility patents for gimbal and 360-degree cameras.
  • Amid DJI's restricted U.S. market access due to the FCC's "Covered list" status, Insta360 currently enjoys unrivaled availability for its first-generation Luna series in the market.
