Linebacker Djabome Making Immediate Impact on Defence for 4-1 Elks
The 22-year-old rookie has seven tackles in each of his first two starts and an interception after Nick Anderson's hamstring injury.
Dariel Djabome stepped into the Edmonton Elks' starting middle linebacker role after Nick Anderson suffered a hamstring injury in the team's third game, recording seven tackles in each of his first two starts with one pass interception in his first game.
The 22-year-old Djabome began his career as an offensive player, playing running back and receiver before Rutgers coach Greg Schiano suggested he switch to defence, a transition that prepared him to fill in when Anderson was sidelined.
Defensive co-ordinator J.C. Sherritt, who spent eight years as a middle linebacker with the Edmonton Eskimos, said Djabome "made a big jump from Game 1 to Game 2" and "learned from his mistakes in the first game and applied them" within a seven-day span.
Head coach Mark Kilam said Djabome "never flinched" when thrust into the starting role, while Anderson remains on the six-game injury list after being one of the most outstanding rookies in 2024.
The Elks' investment in Djabome has accelerated beyond their original timeline; Kilam said the team didn't expect him to start "four games in," yet the rookie has become a critical piece of their defence early in the CFL season.
