‘Dixie’ map that divided US into North and South is going up for auction

Brunk Auctions expects the historic chart to draw bids of up to $1.2 million after remounting it on Japanese rice paper.

  • A hand-drawn chart of the Mason-Dixon Line goes to auction tomorrow in a livestreamed event hosted by Brunk Auctions in Asheville, North Carolina.
  • Surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon originally drew the map to settle a border dispute between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania.
  • The 76-inch by 6.5-inch linen-backed document, initially given to attorney Benjamin Chew, became synonymous with the 1820 Missouri Compromise and the sectional divisions that led to civil war.
  • In 1982, late publisher Malcolm S. Forbes purchased the map for $360,000, outbidding the Library of Congress, which currently lacks the budget to bid again.
  • Brunk Auctions estimates the map could fetch between $800,000 and $1.2 million, with vice president Lauren Brunk hoping a "patriot" will purchase it for the Library.
