Rare Footage of Mediterranean Great White Shark Captured by Ghost Diver
The sighting came during a dive to remove ghost nets, and scientists say Mediterranean great whites have gone unconfirmed for more than 40 years.
In May, volunteer diver Derk Remmers encountered a great white shark more than 132 feet below sea level near a shipwreck between Sicily and Tunisia in the Mediterranean Sea.
To Remmers' knowledge, no one has ever captured footage of a Mediterranean great white, and a sighting has not been made for more than 40 years.
Veronika Mikos, director of Healthy Seas, noted the encounter occurred at a shipwreck ecosystem hotspot and emphasized protecting offshore waters from preventable threats like abandoned fishing gear.
Scientists estimate that around 3 to 10% of all fishing gear is lost annually, creating lethal traps for marine life including sharks like the one Remmers encountered.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies white sharks as vulnerable to extinction; populations have fallen 30-49% over three generations due to overfishing and climate change.
