Coldstream Raises Okanagan Indian Band Flag
The flag recognizes the syilx Okanagan Nation’s history and military service, with the band and Coldstream calling reconciliation an ongoing process.
On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Okanagan Indian Band and the District of Coldstream held a ceremony at Coldstream Cenotaph Park to permanently raise the OKIB flag, symbolizing respect and reconciliation.
Syilx Okanagan people possess a long history of military service, including 100 per cent participation from eligible men aged 20 to 35 during the First World War, recognized by King George and Queen Elizabeth.
As a horse nation, the Okanagan supported British military efforts during the Boer War and continued service through the Second World War, Korean War, and alongside the United States military during the Vietnam War.
Coldstream Mayor Ruth Hoyte stated the ceremony recognized the history and presence of the Okanagan, while Chief Wilson emphasized the long history of military service and contribution during times of war.
Both communities look forward to strengthening their relationship by creating opportunities to learn from one another and work collaboratively on matters of shared importance, building reconciliation through ongoing dialogue and action.
