Infant Girl Found Dead in Dumpster in South LA; Suspected Mother Detained
Investigators are using scene evidence and family accounts to identify the infant and determine how she died.
- On Monday night, residents discovered an infant inside a black bag in a dumpster near 5221 Alba Street in South Los Angeles. Paramedics transported the baby to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, and the Los Angeles Police Department launched a homicide investigation.
- Resident Martha discovered the body while throwing away trash at the Pueblo del Rio housing complex, prompting her daughter to call 911. Investigators believe the baby was four to six months old and stated the death was not gang-related.
- The infant had six toes on one foot, a rare physical trait that grandparents confirmed their granddaughter Luna shared. Detectives with the LAPD's Abused Child Unit are working to confirm the identity through the coroner's office.
- Investigators are searching for the 18-year-old mother, who left the family home Monday after claiming she was seeking the biological father. Police have not established the father's current location or involvement in the infant's life.
- California's Safely Surrendered Baby law provides resources for parents, allowing them to surrender a newborn without penalty within 72 hours. Individuals can find designated sites by calling 1-877-BABYSAF or visiting the program's online location.
