A new mineral dating analysis on the Greenstone Belt in northern Canada suggests that parts of the formation could be 4,160 million years old, being almost as old as our planet, whose age is estimated to be around 4,543 million years old. The results indicate that the belt represents one of the best places to understand the Earth’s past, as it would group together the oldest rocks that have been found so far.
